The New Zealand Visitor Visa from India

One of the few visitor visas that tells you plainly how much money you need to show — and one where the length of your stay quietly decides whether you need a chest X-ray.

What the visa gives you

A New Zealand visitor visa covers tourism, visiting family and friends, and business visitor activities such as meetings and conferences. It does not permit work, and study is limited to a short course.

Two shapes are common. A single-entry visa allows a stay of up to nine months within an eighteen-month period. A multiple-entry visa allows up to six months in any twelve-month period, across as many visits as you like while it is valid.

Your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond the date you intend to leave New Zealand — measured from your departure, not your arrival.

What NZD 441 is actually made of

ComponentNZD
Visitor visa application fee300
Immigration levy41
International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy100
Total441 (≈ ₹24,650)

Most guides quote one number and leave you wondering why the payment page shows another. All three components are paid together with the application, and none of them is refunded if your application is declined — including the visitor levy, which funds conservation and tourism infrastructure you may never get to use.

Rupee figures move with the exchange rate. A medical or chest X-ray, where required, is paid to the panel physician separately.

The funds rule — an unusually clear one

Most consulates leave "sufficient funds" undefined and then refuse you for not having enough of it. Immigration New Zealand does not. The published expectation is:

For a three-week trip with hotels prepaid, that is a modest and easily evidenced figure. Because the number is published, failing it is entirely avoidable — and failing it anyway reads worse than it would elsewhere.

Evidence it with bank statements covering six months, and if someone else is funding the trip, with their statements and a sponsorship form. What matters, as everywhere, is that the balance looks like the ordinary state of your account rather than something arranged last week.

The medical thresholds most guides miss

This is the detail that decides how long your application takes, and it is set by the length of stay you ask for:

Intended stayHealth requirement
Up to 6 monthsNormally none
More than 6 monthsChest X-ray certificate (INZ 1096)
More than 12 monthsFull medical certificate (INZ 1007)

Asking for a longer stay than you need is not free — it can move you across a threshold and add a panel-clinic appointment, a fee and several weeks to your file. If your trip is five weeks, apply for the stay your trip needs.

Timing

Immigration New Zealand publishes that 80 per cent of visitor visa applications are decided within two weeks, which is genuinely fast by the standards of everything else on this site. That figure is an average across all applicants, though, and Indian applications that attract a medical request or a query for further documents sit well outside it.

Plan on three to six weeks, and apply earlier than that if your stay crosses the six-month line and a chest X-ray is in the picture.

The documents

The application is made online through Immigration Online, or on paper using form INZ 1017. Beyond the passport and the form, you will need a photograph to the 35 × 45 mm white-background specification, six months of bank statements, income tax returns, proof of employment or business with sanctioned leave, a day-wise itinerary matching your flights and accommodation, and travel insurance.

If a relative or friend in New Zealand is supporting you, they complete form INZ 1025, the sponsorship form for temporary entry, and provide their status, address, employment and IRD tax summaries for the last two years. A sponsor undertakes real financial responsibility by signing it, which is worth both of you understanding before they do.

We publish a complete, current New Zealand document checklist — every form and document in the order to assemble it, the occupation-specific sets for salaried, business, agricultural and retired applicants, and exactly what the sponsor in New Zealand has to provide. It is a ₹500 download, and included when we file on your behalf.

Why New Zealand applications from India get declined

In closing

New Zealand is among the more transparent systems an Indian traveller can apply to: the fee is itemised, the funds expectation is published, and the health rules are set out against clear thresholds. Ask for the stay you actually need, evidence the money at the published rate, and most of what goes wrong elsewhere simply does not arise here.

If you'd rather not do this alone

Our desk files New Zealand visitor visas end to end — the online application, document review, sponsorship paperwork, and arranging the chest X-ray or medical if your stay requires one. We'll tell you honestly if your file looks thin before you spend NZD 441. If you only want the paperwork sorted, the New Zealand document checklist is a ₹500 download.
