Where an Indian Passport Takes You Without a Visa

Fifty-three destinations you can reach without filing anything in advance — and the conditions that still apply once you get there, which is the part most lists leave out.

Two different things, often confused

Visa-free means exactly that: you land, present your passport, and are admitted. No visa is issued, nothing is usually paid, and there is no counter to queue at beyond immigration itself.

Visa on arrival means a visa is issued — at the airport, when you land. There is normally a counter, a form, a fee, and a queue that can run long on a busy evening. Crucially, it can also be refused at that counter, after you have flown.

Neither removes the entry conditions. They remove the paperwork you do beforehand, not the requirements you must satisfy on the day.

Entry rules for Indian passports change several times a year, often at short notice — Thailand and Malaysia have both moved recently. Every rule above should be re-checked against the destination's official immigration site close to travel. Our desk verifies it before any booking we make.

What "visa-free" does not mean

This is where the trouble starts, because the phrase promises more than it delivers. Border officers in visa-free countries retain full discretion to refuse entry, and the practical checks are much the same as anywhere.

Expect to need a confirmed return or onward ticket, an address for your stay, and evidence of funds — sometimes a specific amount per day, occasionally in cash. Your passport will generally need six months of validity from the date you land, which is the single most common reason Indian travellers are refused at check-in, and blank pages for stamps.

The check that actually stops people happens in India, at the departure gate. Airlines are fined heavily for carrying a passenger who is refused entry, so they verify these conditions before boarding — often more rigorously than the destination does on arrival.

Practical points

  1. Visa on arrival can be refused on arrival. That is not a theoretical risk on a one-way booking with no accommodation.
  2. Carry cash for the fee. Several visa-on-arrival counters take local currency or US dollars only, and the ATM past immigration is no use to you before it.
  3. Some "free" entries need a form first — Sri Lanka's ETA, Kenya's travel authorisation, Hong Kong's pre-arrival registration, the Maldives' Imuga declaration. Free is not the same as nothing to do.
  4. Print things. A phone with no signal at a foreign immigration desk is a bad place to discover this.
  5. The stay is a maximum, not an entitlement. The officer can grant less than the number in the table.
  6. Check within days of departure. Of everything on this page, this is the rule with the shortest shelf life.

If your destination is not on this list

The countries most Indian travellers actually want — the Schengen area, the UK, the US, Canada, Australia — all require a visa applied for in advance, and each has its own logic. We have written those up individually, with current fees and the reasons applications from India get refused.

Book the trip, or file the visa

For visa-free and visa-on-arrival destinations we can put the whole trip together — flights, hotels, and a check that the entry rules still say what this page says before you pay for anything. For everywhere else, our desk files the visa end to end.

This guide is for general information and is not immigration advice. Entry rules for Indian passport holders change frequently and without notice. Always confirm current requirements with the destination's official immigration authority, and with your airline, before travelling. Admission is always at the discretion of the border officer.
