Which Schengen Country Should You Apply To?

You do not apply to "Europe". You apply to one country, and the law decides which one. Here is the rule in plain words, and eight real itineraries worked through.

The rule, in the words of the law

The Schengen Visa Code (Regulation 810/2009, Article 5) decides which country must examine your application. It works in three steps, in this order:

1. One destination: apply to that country.
2. More than one destination: apply to the main destination, measured by length of stay counted in days, or by the purpose of the stay.
3. No main destination can be found: apply to the country whose external border you will cross first to enter the Schengen area.

The same rule applies if you plan several separate trips within two months: they are looked at together.

Where you land does not decide it. Where the cheapest or fastest appointment is does not decide it. Your nights and your purpose decide it.

Step 1: count your nights

For a normal holiday, the main destination is simply the country where you spend the most nights. Write your trip as a list of nights per country, taken from your hotel bookings, not from memory.

Step 2: when the purpose decides

The law allows the purpose to decide the main destination, not only the nights. This matters when the whole trip is built around one event in one country.

• A wedding in Italy: you attend the wedding in Tuscany for 3 nights, then holiday in France for 4. The reason for the trip is the wedding, so Italy can be your main destination. Carry the wedding invitation.
• A football final in Madrid, or Las Fallas in Valencia: the match or the festival is the reason you are travelling. Show the ticket or the booking for the event.
• Visiting a friend in Berlin: the visit is the purpose; the invitation letter and the friend's address support it.

Step 3: equal nights and no main purpose

If no main destination can be determined, you apply to the country where you will first cross the Schengen external border.

Why the wrong consulate is a problem

The consulate checks your form, your hotel bookings and your flights against this rule. If your nights say Switzerland and you applied to France because the slot was earlier, the file does not add up. At best you are sent to the right consulate and lose time; at worst the application is refused, and a Schengen refusal is visible to every member state.

Timing, once you know the country

You can apply up to six months before your trip, and as a rule no later than 15 calendar days before it (Visa Code, Article 9). The consulate normally decides within 15 calendar days, which can be extended to 45 days when the file needs more checks (Article 23). Appointments in peak season are often the real wait, so we suggest applying two to three months ahead.

A five-minute check before you book an appointment

1. Write nights per country from your hotel bookings.
2. Ask: is the whole trip built around one event in one country, with proof?
3. If not, pick the country with the most nights.
4. If two or more are equal, pick the country of first entry into Schengen.
5. Make sure your form, hotels, flights and cover letter all show the same trip.

Common questions

Which Schengen country should I apply to if I visit several countries?

Apply to the main destination: the country where you spend the most nights, or the country that is the main purpose of the trip, such as a wedding or an event. If no main destination can be found, apply to the country where you first enter the Schengen area.

Does the country I land in decide where I apply?

No. Landing in a country does not make it your main destination. The number of nights, or the main purpose of the trip, decides.

What if I spend equal nights in two Schengen countries?

If there is no main purpose and the nights are equal, apply to the country whose external border you cross first to enter the Schengen area.

How early can I apply for a Schengen visa?
