The Bank Statement for a Visitor Visa
Most families think the officer wants a big number. The officer is really asking two questions: can you pay for this trip, and does this money belong to your life?
What the officer is checking
Every visitor visa asks the same thing in different words: can you pay for the whole trip and the journey home. The Schengen Visa Code calls it "sufficient means of subsistence both for the duration of the intended stay and for the return" (Article 14). The UK Home Office tells its caseworkers to check that the applicant "has access to sufficient resources to maintain and accommodate themselves adequately for the whole of their planned visit."
Notice what is not there: a fixed balance. There is no magic number. The money has to fit the trip, and it has to look like it is yours.
How many months
| Where | What the official checklist asks |
|---|---|
| Schengen (e.g. Germany, Italy consulates in India) | Last 3 months of personal statements, stamped by the bank |
| UK | Statements showing the origin of the funds; documents over a year old carry less weight |
| Canada | Proof you can support yourself for the visit; no fixed amount |
Checklists differ by consulate and change, so always use the current checklist of the country you apply to. In practice, six months of statements tells a clearer story than three, especially for business owners and farmers whose income arrives unevenly.
The sudden deposit problem
A large amount that arrived a few weeks before the application is the most common weakness we see. The UK guidance is direct about it: where most of the funds "have not been held in their account for long", caseworkers may make further checks on where the money came from.
Money borrowed from a relative to "show balance" usually reads exactly as what it is. If a large amount arrived recently for a real reason (a property sale, an FD maturing, a business receipt), show the paper that explains it: the sale deed, the FD receipt, the invoice.
When someone else pays
It is normal for a son or daughter abroad to pay for parents' trips. Say so openly. The UK guidance allows support from a third party, including family members, and asks for evidence of what support is being given and that the sponsor can afford it. For a Schengen family visit, Germany's checklist includes the sponsor's formal obligation letter (Verpflichtungserklärung) where one is given.
Declared is better than discovered. A sponsor you name, with their bank statement and a letter, reads better than transfers the officer finds on their own.
What makes a statement read well
- Regular income arriving: salary, pension, rent or business receipts, month after month.
- Normal spending: a real life passes through the account.
- A balance that fits the trip: flights, hotels and daily costs for every night, plus a margin.
- Matching papers: the ITR, salary slips or CA statement agree with what the account shows.
- Original, stamped statements where the checklist asks for them.
What does not help
- A large deposit with no paper behind it.
- Business turnover and household money mixed in one account with nothing to separate them.
- A balance far out of line with your declared income.
- Leaving out a sponsor who is really paying.
Common questions
How much bank balance do I need for a visitor visa?
There is no single fixed amount for UK, Schengen or Canada visitor visas. The balance has to cover the whole trip and the journey home, and it has to look like it belongs to your normal income.
How many months of bank statements are needed?
Schengen consulates in India usually list the last 3 months, stamped by the bank. The UK and Canada ask for proof of funds without a fixed number of months. Six months often tells a clearer story.
Is a sudden large deposit a problem?
It can be. UK guidance says caseworkers may make further checks when most of the funds have not been in the account for long. If the money arrived for a real reason, attach the document that explains it.
Can my son or daughter abroad pay for my trip?
Yes. Family members can support a visit. Declare it openly and add the sponsor's letter and bank statements.
